HSC is hosting a birthday party on Saturday, August 19th and we are looking for a facility tour guide to help! This position will only be responsible for leading the birthday party group, no other portions of the party will be required. The tour guide will lead the birthday party guests around our Animal Resource Center to show behind the scenes of what we do at HSC. We will have 3 other volunteers helping keep guests together but are looking for someone knowledgeable on the building and someone who has led tours in the past.
A few guidelines for the tour:
- During the tour, please help keep children together, calm, and their voices down to limit any more stress on our animals (and staff).
- The tour will begin in the back of the facility and the back doors are locked by code. PLEASE keep the door open if guests go outside or have one volunteer stay inside to reopen the door to avoid being locked outside of the building.
- In the medical and surgery room, it is extremely important that guests keep their hands off all equipment. There will be no surgeries or any medical procedures happening on this day so the room will be empty.
- Once the tour reaches the dog and cat adoption areas, if needed, one half of the group can go to dog adoptions with volunteers and the other half can go to cat adoptions with volunteers.
- After about 10-15 minutes, groups can switch areas.
- In the cat rooms, only allow 3-4 children in each room at a time to help avoid stressing cats.
- Please remind guests to be mindful of animal behaviors and avoid provoking any negative behaviors.
- In the dog adoption area, if dogs are barking, jumping, seem stressed, etc. Please make sure guests move on to a different kennel to avoid stressing the dog any further.
For groups of children, we typically begin the tour in the back of the ARC and end with the animal adoption areas. The most exciting part of the tour for the children is the animal areas, so we like to save it for last! I will provide a tour guide sheet along with fast facts and interesting statistics that will help you lead this tour.
